Project Management [PM] software has come a long
way since its beginning in the main frame
computers in the sixties. The software
cost was above hundred thousand dollars and the
output was pages of printouts. The
computer graphics were not invented then.
Micro computers in the eighties provided the
major boost for the software.
Software history buffs should note that a
PM software called Instaplan changed the US
India trade links in a remarkable way.
Wipro then a start-up software company made a
tie-up with a US firm to develop Instaplan -
a PM software. The now standard business model
of off shore software development by
industrialized nations have been first used
successfully in Instaplan.
The first DOS based project management software
for micro computers probably was PS2. It
was published by Sciforma in 1982.
Harvard Project Manager, a DOS based PM software
was released in 1983 had the elements of all the
major components of a modern PM scheduling
software.
Primavera the market leader in PM software was
established in 1985 and Microsoft Project became
popular by 1995.
